The Sweet & the Pretty...

As you walk along the streets of Paris you come across so many pretty and sweet things to see.

The shops look so pretty at night they just come alive...

Cafe's just seem to glow at night in Paris...

Flower shops everywhere they smell so pretty as you walk by...

And of course the sweet....Eiffel Tower out of Macaroons...

Shop windows so pretty...

The Louvre...

Day 4 in Paris, so today we planned to slow it down as we have been going non stop. Our plans were to go to the Louvre, do some shopping and see the Arc de Triomphe at night. After spending 6 hours walking around the Louvre in awe of everything the Louvre has to offer. The Louvre is the worlds third largest museum, building it commenced in the 1100's and was completed in the 1900's. If you spent 3 seconds viewing each exhibit, 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week, you would be there for just over 3 months!!! We also saw the Mona Lisa, I couldnt believe we were actually in front of this amazing piece of art.

Mona Lisa...

Sphinx...

Artwork on the ceiling at the Louvre...

It has been frustrating waiting for people to move on so I can take a photo of things, Paul has mastered the art of moving people on, he just goes and stands next to them and smiles. Like magic they just disappear.

I have decided to listen to my body and call it quits for today head back to our room and have a rest. I am sure a bit of R&R will make the world of difference. With thousands of steps climbed and thousands of miles walked, A bit of R&R is well deserved. Au revoir.

Paul & His Humour...

Well I am sure by now you all know Paul's humour. He was telling me to move my hand and I had no idea why? Until I saw the picture, so of course it was Paul's turn. Pay back!

So no guessing who's idea this picture was, Enjoy the giggle!!!

Trust me Paul...

Payback is sweet...

87 Dollars for 87 steps...

We had to laugh yesterday as we came around the corner from where we boarded the "Hop on Hop off Bus" the day before. "You see that green bus stop sign", that's where we hopped on the bus that cost $87 for a 2 day pass to go to the "Notre Dame". Yep if we had of turned around we would have only had to walk about 87 steps, oh well... all part of the experience as they say. Our 2 day pass got us to the Markets & Arc de Triomphe, I am sure a taxi would have been much cheaper, oh well you live and learn. Lol.

Priceless.....

My "PANIC ATTACK" boy I wished I knew more French. To warm up we headed into a local Mc Donald's to have a cuppa & go to the toilet. All was going well until I tried to open the door of the toilet, "Oh no I am locked in....it won't open." So trying to stay calm I started banging on the door yelling "excusie excusie!!" A lady tried to help me from the other side, not knowing what she was saying, I just banged louder hoping she would get some universal message of "HELP". Well it worked security came and opened the door for me. All this time Paul having no idea of what I was going through and just patiently waited outside for me.

Our 20th Wedding Anniversary in Paris...

Day 3 in Paris, our 20th wedding Anniversary. So another early start today up at 3am local time getting ready for the day. So our plans were, to renew our wedding vows, cruise along the La Seine & have dinner on the cruise. Well our plans changed as the day went on, but still very special. Reliving and reminiscing over the last 20 years with lots of giggles and smiles along the way.

Today we went back to the Louvre to get some extra photos missed from the prior day. We were there too early to go into the museum, so we will go back again as we need to see the Mona Lisa. We then jumped back on the Metro, & headed off to see the Pantheon. When we got there, the sheer size of this building and detail is mind blowing!! When you go inside your head pops off! The scale and beauty of the artwork and statues is just amazing. We saw Foucaults pendulum swinging from the highest point of the roof to the centre of the building, demonstrating the earths rotation, this actually tells the time! The Pantheon was originally built in 512 AD and redesigned and completed in the year 1790. We went down stairs into the crypts and viewed all the Saints tombs.

Directly behind this building is yes another Church (Saint Etienne-du-Mont). As we venture into another church you might think once you've seen one you've seen them all. How wrong you would be, they all have different personalities and a different look in each of them. We actually stood on the same ground in there as Pope John Paul II when he visited there for a mass in 1997. The gold tomb of St Genevieve is here too. The pipe organs were enormous, and again the art work, buildings fixtures and fittings have so much detail. It has to be seen to be appreciated.

We then took another long walk to find Notre Dame, another church in this beautiful city. Well let me tell you I thought the Pantheon blew our heads off. This place takes the cake, look at the detail on the outside. When you get inside, all you hear is "wow" "ooooh" "argh" it's just sooo big and again the artwork and statues are truly just beautiful.

After this we decided to find our "hop on and off bus stop" to go to the Arc de Triomphe, well we walked for an hour, tempers and 'tantie's' all the way!! Paul finds the original stop where we first purchased the tickets from the day prior. We jump on and get off at the Arc de Triomphe. It's enormous and the carvings are amazing. A perpetual flame burns in memory of the unnamed soldier buried underneath it. Ok now it's dinner time, the plan is let's get back on the bus and get off at the Eiffel Tower, go down to the La Seine and take a dinner cruise for our anniversary. As we approach the tower, Paul hits the stop button for the next stop. The lady driver chatting on her mobile just keeps on driving, ce la vie. I told Paul don't worry lets go back to the Arc de Triomphe to take pics at night & it was getting very cold now. As we continued the bus trip we saw Riot Police barricading off streets as there was a protest of some kind happening. I'm glad we weren't walking! We are now about 10 stops from returning to Arc de Triomphe and we are stopping in the city and the driver gets off her mobile and says hello everybody get off the trip is over today, thank you! Lol.

As night fell it was so cold here, the coldest so far 2 degrees with a wind chill factor of freezing. As I froze in the streets of Paris I knew my plans had to change very quickly. So we ended up in a little Italian restaurant in Paris. You might be wondering why a Italian restaurant in France, well it couldn't have been more fitting. As Paul proposed to me on a gondola and that day was just perfect and romantic. Now it was just as romantic. So being in the most romantic city in the world and recreating that special day. Adding the Italian element to the day couldn't have been more perfect.
A special thank you to my dearest friend Lee, with out her Paul and I would have never been, so thank you for setting us up, as the last 20 years have the best.

Christmas in Paris...

As it is only 4 weeks until Christmas, Paris has come alive with Christmas Decorations. Seeing all the festive lights in such a pretty place, sure was lovely too see.

Tree decorated and ready

Streets so pretty

Hi Santa

A Rainy day in Paris...

Day 2 and feeling a lot more confident with the Metro. We bought tickets and got to our destination Louvre no worries. Then off to the Pantheon, this is where it all goes wrong lol. We also come across the padlock bridge as well, this is where lovers come to pledge their love for one another, they write their names on the lock then lock it to the bridge and throw the key into Le Seine river. In Paris there are 2 bridges this can be done on, one for your "true love" the other for your "lover"!! Holy cow a lot of people play up, as there is hardly any space left on the bridge for the lover, and plenty of space on the bridge for your true love. A man today kindly told me I had lost my ring and picked it up off the ground next to us, I told him it wasn't mine. This is a scam and they target tourists, thanks for the tip on this Tracy.

It started to rain so we headed for cover in a Cafe as you do in Paris. Whilst we were having a cuppa, we looked across the road and saw a beautiful building, yes another one. We thought we would have a look inside, after a body search and a bag scan we walked into a church it was Sainte-Chapelle. It is so beautiful we just couldn't believe our eyes. The stained glass windows and sculptures were like nothing we had ever seen before. This church was built in 1242 to 1248 in accordance to Louis the IX (King from 1226 to 1270 and the future Saint Louis) to house the relics of the passion of Christ. The most famous of these relics was the Crown of Thorns (worn by Christ) acquired in 1239 for a sum that greatly exceeded the cost of the building itself!

The colours so vibrant

The stained glass windows are awe inspiring and to understand them you need to read them, the way this is done is left to right bottom to top. If you look at this picture bottom right corner shows Jesus being crowned with the crown of thorns. Truly amazing jaw dropping stuff!

Reading the stained glass windows

Then we boarded a hop on and off bus to see some sights in Paris. As it was still raining we didn't want to waste a minute. Thankfully, the rain stopped so we hopped off and headed off sight seeing again. Paris has so many wonderful places too see. We found another cafe to stop for a cuppa and snack before continuing sight seeing. Paul had escargot for the first time,  he said back home he wanted to roll the way the French do and he did. So he ate them all while I squirmed at the thought.

Really Paul? Snails???

Bon appetite!

We then walked across the road to another AMAZING building Orange Center Madeleine. Yep another Church, the size is just unbelievable and then when you walk inside, you really get to appreciate the detail.

Madeleine Church

We strolled along the markets tonight which was pretty. It gets very cold at night, but while you are strolling through the streets you walk over grates on the street which blow heat up, very nice and warm. Great to stop and have a chat while you warm up.

The Markets

We made it back to the hotel tonight with no dramas in finding our way back, woohoo. Paul has got the Metro all worked out now!

The Eiffel Tower & much more...

Our first full day in Paris. Boy what a day it was, we were headed for the Eiffel Tower today. We were amazed by the sheer size of the tower. We headed straight to the top and boy what a treat that was. You could see the city for miles & miles! It was that windy at 324 metres high you could feel the tower swaying. But once you moved around the other side it was so calm. It was everything I had hoped for and more, we spent a few hours here just taking in all the sights.

We then saw the French Embassy, Nef du Grand Palais, Ecole Militaire, Hotel National Des Invalides, Musee Des plans-reliefs, Basilica Sainte-Clotilde. We couldn't believe the details in these lovely old buildings, they were just bursting with character. We had dinner in a lovely little French restaurant in a little cobblestone lane way, which was very nice.

On our way back to the Metro we experienced Paris by night which had a completely different element to it. Somehow the city just transforms into different beautiful dimensions with buildings glowing and the Eiffel Tower twinkling on the hour for 5 mins....

The Metro well that is just like a rabbit warren and was quite confusing. It takes some time to get your head around it, but it is all part of the experience. Once again, we got right royally lost trying to get back to our hotel. After about an hour of going this way and that way, we decided to catch a taxi. As it was nearly 11pm local time it had been a long day as we left at 8am in the morning. So you can see we are getting as much in as we can each day. Creating many happy memories along the way.
